To change the icon of a map marker, press up/down arrow until you get to the marker you want to use. You can enter text by typing, and then Enter will finalize the mark. You can type in a name for the marker, or just press enter to place it. After double-clicking, press up and down to change the marker, and press shift-up and -down to change the color. Another quick cheesy way is with addGroupIcon but that requires each player to be in a separate group and 3D View of an icon only goes up to 1,500m tops. Double click on the map to place a marker that will be visible to anyone in your current chat channel. Some useful icons can be found in configFile > "CfgVehicleIcons". The old way from ARMA 2 used the UI method, in ARMA 3 things such as that are easier achieved with DrawIcon3D which supports Icons & Text.
